Account Termination Policy
Voluntary and involuntary termination; effects on data and backups.
Defined terms carry the meanings given in BeDeeper's shared legal definitions unless expressly redefined here.
In plain language
This Policy describes what happens when a membership or an account ends — whether you end it or BeDeeper does. It reads with:
- Ownership of what you write, and export rights: Content Ownership
- What we store, how long, and how member rights work: Privacy Policy
- Billing effects of cancellation and refunds: Billing Policy and Refund & Cancellation
- Prohibited conduct that can lead to involuntary termination: Acceptable Use
1. Two things end separately
Membership and account are separate.
- Ending your membership stops future renewals. You keep your account and your writing.
- Deleting your account removes your account and your writing from BeDeeper.
You may do either or both, in either order. Cancellation is described in Billing Policy and Refund & Cancellation. Account deletion is described in this Policy.
2. Voluntary account deletion (self-serve)
You may delete your account at any time.
- Open Settings.
- Open the Security section.
- Choose "Delete my account."
- Type the word required to confirm.
- Confirm.
BeDeeper signs you out and initiates deletion.
Before deleting, consider using the export options described in Content Ownership if you want a copy of your writing to keep.
3. What is deleted, and when
When you delete your account, BeDeeper removes your account and the member content associated with it from live systems. This includes:
- Your account record and profile.
- Your Living Journal entries.
- Your Passage reflections.
- Your Lantern conversations and long-term memories BeDeeper has extracted for you.
- Your Compass content — maps, life-compass responses, north-star declarations, Dream Journal entries.
- Your vision-board reflections and uploaded images (from storage buckets).
- Your voice reflections (from storage buckets).
- Your Artifacts and Wisdom Shelf favorites.
- Your Sanctuary member state.
Deletion in live systems happens immediately upon confirmed deletion. Related database rows cascade to remove the content above.
Membership records at Stripe are not stored inside BeDeeper's own user database in a way that survives deletion; the Stripe customer and any active subscription are also released. Prior payment history is retained by Stripe under its own terms and BeDeeper's accounting obligations (see section 5).
4. Backups
Deleted content may persist for a limited window in BeDeeper's operational, encrypted backups before it is overwritten in normal backup rotation. During that window:
- The backup copy is not restored to live systems except to recover from a documented incident.
- The backup copy is not surfaced to anyone (member or staff) except in the incident-recovery scenario, and even then only to the minimum extent necessary.
Where the current backup rotation window is proposed rather than fixed, BeDeeper's legal consistency review records the item for founder confirmation.
5. What BeDeeper is required to retain
Some records BeDeeper cannot delete when you delete your account, because BeDeeper is required to keep them:
- Billing and tax records. Invoices, charges, refunds, and other billing records BeDeeper needs to comply with accounting, tax, and audit obligations. These are generally held in Stripe under its own retention.
- Legal obligations. Records BeDeeper is required to retain by law, or under a specific legal preservation obligation (such as a lawful order).
- Security records. Time-limited security logs kept for detection, investigation, and diagnosis.
Retained records are used only for the purpose that required their retention and are subject to Privacy Policy.
6. Export before you leave
BeDeeper wants you to be able to take your writing with you.
- Individual Lantern conversations can be exported today from the sanctuary as a text file.
- Where a self-serve export does not yet exist for every content class, you may request an export by writing to privacy@bedeeper.com. BeDeeper aims to acknowledge within seven (7) days and respond within a reasonable timeframe consistent with applicable law.
- The full picture of export rights is in Content Ownership. Any current gap between the self-serve tooling and this Policy is recorded in BeDeeper's legal consistency review.
7. Founding status after deletion
Deleting your account releases any Founding slot you occupied. If you delete your account and later create a new account, that new account is a new member — Founding status is not restored automatically, and the protection windows described in Billing Policy that apply to a lapsed but existing Founding membership do not extend to a fully deleted account.
8. Involuntary termination
BeDeeper may suspend or terminate an account where BeDeeper reasonably believes doing so is necessary or appropriate — for example, in response to a material breach of Terms of Service, Acceptable Use, or Community Guidelines; in response to a lawful order; or to protect the safety of a person, the integrity of the sanctuary, or BeDeeper itself.
Where BeDeeper acts:
- BeDeeper aims to communicate the action and its basis, unless doing so would compromise a lawful investigation, the safety of another member, or the integrity of the sanctuary.
- Where feasible and appropriate, BeDeeper will offer a reasonable window to export writing before deletion.
- BeDeeper may preserve specific data for a period that is proportionate to the concern (for example, to comply with a legal preservation obligation).
Involuntary termination for material breach may forfeit any refund otherwise available under Refund & Cancellation, except where a refund is required by law.
9. Effect on The Lantern's memory
When your account is deleted, the long-term memories BeDeeper has extracted for you and used to help The Lantern remember with you are deleted with the rest of your account. They are not moved to another member and they are not retained by BeDeeper after deletion (subject to the backup window in section 4).
Prior messages you and The Lantern exchanged that were sent to the model provider during a session are subject to the provider's own retention terms; see AI Transparency and BeDeeper's Legal Foundation.
10. If we close BeDeeper
If BeDeeper ever winds down the sanctuary, BeDeeper will give members reasonable notice and a reasonable window to export writing before content is deleted, subject to any legal or safety obligation that requires earlier action. Assignment of BeDeeper in a corporate transaction is described in Terms of Service; the commitments in Content Ownership bind any successor.
11. Contact
Requests to delete an account or general questions about this Policy may be sent to support@bedeeper.com. Requests specifically relating to your data rights — access, correction, export, deletion — should go to the privacy contact.
